How to get a great website!
1. Decide what YOU want/need and work from there. Don’t be wishy-washy & don’t keep changing your mind. Look at nice clean sites to get some good ideas before your first meeting with your designer.
2. Make sure your site works for your customers/target audience. You should be pleased by the site, however if it pleases you but is confusing to your clients, it’s not a good site.
3. Less stuff. Easy navigation. Happier customers.
4. Do some research. Google ‘website cost’ to see the range of costs and learn a bit more.
5. Give things a chance. If your designer suggests less flash and easier navigation, try it for awhile. If you’re going for a redesign and your old site is flashy, try simple and uncluttered.
6. Your web presence represents you and your business. Do you really want a black background with the ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ theme being looped and flashing red lights representing your plumbing company? Is this what you want your customers to see or think of your business? The same goes for sites that are old and outdated. Click a link and its no longer there, or the page has NO info at all on it, or it has one sentence that has been there for 5 years? Update and get rid of all those useless links and pages.
7. EASE of use! Information at hand! Give your customers what they want and need.
8. If you hire a web designer: hire one who will listen. Then listen to her suggestions. Let her do her job and don’t add to that job (costing you MORE money and her more time) by changing your mind about fonts or menus, etc. Asking her to create sample pages for you (after you've settled on one design) is asking her for more work. If you do this expect to pay by the hour for those samples. That being said, do not be afraid to say you want things changed or do not like things. You're the boss on this project and it will ultimately represent you and your business. But speak up as soon as you see something that you want changed; if you wait too long your web designer will have hours of work to change and will most probably bill you for this time.
9. Have one contact person to work with your designer. This person must be able to supply information for the site within a reasonable time frame. Your designer cannot guess or make up information about you or your business and you can’t leave her hanging waiting on you to remember to send her what you want.
10. Don’t settle for less than you or your business deserves BUT be reasonable in your expectations of what you’re paying for. Ask for more than originally agreed to and expect to pay for it. Designers must make a living too!
Due to a recent situation with a potential client, I will be insisting on discussing price from first contact. It is unfortunate that it has come to this but from here on out, I will have to have a budget to work with, a simple contract signed, and 1/2 the expected cost paid upfront. Ironically this potential client was not a poor struggling upstart business, rather a very well known, established group, made up of mostly businessmen who should know the old adage, "You get what you pay for." or "There's no such thing as a free lunch." Instead I made a mistake thinking since I was dealing with successful businessmen, I wouldn't be mistreated. I happened, in those moments of stupidity to subscribe to the "There's a sucker born every minute." But no more! I've finally learned that it doesn't matter what label clothes you wear, you're not gonna screw me. I do my best to provide quality work at more than reasonable prices to my clients. I won't work for free. It's that simple.
